This Guitar really “ROCKS”

Custom built Guitar made from Galaxy Black Granite.

A CNC machining center for stone was used to create this ‘rock’ guitar which is made from Galaxy Black granite. The stone was calibrated down to 10mm on the CNC to reduce weight. The shape, holes, pockets and all the cut outs for the pick-ups and multiple switches were routed on a Prussiani Oceania CNC machine. Clamping down a small piece like this guitar is always a little challenge with only suction but it was holding just fine and did not move at all.

The piece was done on the CNC machine in 3 stages. First the stone was put on the CNC face down to calibrate the thickness to 10mm. For the second stage the stone was flipped over on the spot using the same reference points to keep the piece on the same position. This is so that holes, pockets and cut outs are lining up perfectly as programmed. For the third stage the vacuum cups were rearranged and the stone flipped face down again so that the CNC can do all the necessary routing of pockets and cable channels.

After the stone was finished on the CNC the edges were hand polished and then laminated to a Paulownia timber base which is a very light weight material. The total weight of the finished guitar is only 4.7kg.
